Interview with Xavier E

I am a Pop/Dance cross-over artist. I love all dance music artists like Amuka Kelly, Britney Spears, Amber. Then there is Janet Jackson, Madonna, Kylie and the list goes on.

The Lab: What's the origin of your name/pseudonym?
Xavier E: It is my first name plus the first letter of my last name.

The Lab: What is your slogan, motto, tagline or catchphrase?
Xavier E: My body is a temple!

The Lab: Who are some of your favorite independent artists?
Xavier E: The Constellation, Chic and Sassy. There are so many artists and styles of music out there. I have a wide variety of tastes. I know these artists and they are not only talented but amazing people.

The Lab: When did you begin making music? What inspired you to make music?
Xavier E: I started making music 5 years ago. I always wanted to sing. I had an opportunity to make a Demo with a major record label so I did. I did a demo of "Imagine" (by John Lennon), "Time after Time" (a version by Eva Cassidy) and "If I Can Make You Love Me" (by Bonnie Rait). Then I met a producer from Real Brave Audio and Recorded and recorded a few tracks there. Then I met Sweet Rains Productions, who just gave my music its flare, the edge I needed. My mother, father and my life experiences inspired most of my music. For example, a song off my album "Scam Artist" called "Devotion Of A Life Time" was inspired by my father who was sick and left bedridden for many years. My mother took care of him until he died. I wanted to write a song for him to my mother saying thank you for devoting your life to me and taking care of me till death do we part.

Introducing The Original Dom Kennedy

Quiet as it’s kept, Dom Kennedy is on the forefront of hip-hop as far as up-and-coming rappers in L.A. are concerned. Although the Leimert Park native has no big industry co-signs or a label deal, there’s one thing that’s almost impossible to overlook—his overwhelming fan base.

It’s been almost a year since From The Westside, With Love dropped and took Dom zig-zagging across the country and abroad doing shows (traveling as far as Djibouti, Africa). The mixtape ultimately put him in a position to start seeing things a little differently.

Dom’s new mixtape, The Original Dom Kennedy, which dropped yesterday, intends to be more of a reflection of the way the Cali rapper wants to express himself as an artist from here on out. It features ten all-new tracks, all original production, and is a throwback to Dom’s beginnings in music as well as a nod to authenticity and ingenuity.

Mac Miller Interview

With all respect to Drake, at 18-years-old, we have to shout out to the fact that Mac Miller is now the youngest (rapper) doing it. After a shitload of viral videos and a highly anticipated and downloaded mixtape, K.I.D.S., (downloaded 46,000-plus times on Datpiff.com alone, as this is typed), this Pittsburgh emcee finds himself as one of the most talked about rappers on the internet today. Just a recent high school graduate, and newly signed to Rostrum Records (same label home as budding rap star Wiz Khalifa), Mac may just be a kid, but he’s at the forefront of rap’s ’90’s babies movement.

Just weeks after the release of K.I.D.S., Ozonemag.com called up the new kid on the block to talk about his rise on the worldwide web, rap’s new generation, mixtape success and just being a muthafuckin’ kid.

You’re only 18, so how long have you been rapping?
I’ve been into music since I was 6-years-old, played piano, guitars, drummers, all the instruments. I used to write little raps as a kid. When I was 14 in high school, I started taking it a little more serious. I used to just freestyle non-stop, 24-7. And then when I got to 15, my homie told me I should record some of [my music]. So I recorded it and put out a mixtape by myself in three weeks. And since then, I’ve been working every single day. Music has been my passion from the earliest I can remember, that’s been my favorite thing to do.
