Baylor professor debunks wildly popular muscle-building supplement
Category: Life & Style Written by Mark Wiggins @ kxxv.com
The nutritional supplement market is a multi-million dollar industry, fueled by amazing claims and little accountability. Now a local professor is taking on one of its biggest money-makers.
The advertising is hard to beat.
With names like NO2 Black, N.O. XPLODE and jack3d, nitric oxide products have taken the workout supplement market by storm. For anywhere from $10 to $100 per bottle, they contain the active ingredient arginine-alpha-ketoglutarate (AAKG), which claims to increase nitric oxide production in the body. The intended result is dilation of the blood vessels -- a process called "vasodilation" -- resulting in more blood to flow to the muscles and gigantic "pumps" in the gym.
It's marketed as a Holy Grail for those looking to get mind-blowing biceps -- but there may be a slight problem.
"Well, we found out that it doesn't work," says Dr. Darryn Willoughby, research professor at Baylor University. Willoughby is also a competitive bodybuilder with a laboratory split between scientific instruments and workout equipment, and says a hunch led him to put the popular supplement to the test.

6 small changes to keep off the pounds
Category: Life & Style Written by SmoothieDs.com
Trying to reverse the 1-to-2-pounds-a-year weight gain that is the fate of the average middle-aged American? Overwhelmed at the thought of changing your lifestyle enough to reach a healthful weight?
Fortunately, there is an alternative approach to the drastic diet and exercise revisions that Americans find so difficult to embark on and sustain. The idea is to start with smaller, easier changes that will, at the very least, halt the weight-creep and give encouraging results.
"We find that people who make small changes will often lose a few pounds," said James O. Hill, Ph.D., director of the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center at the University of Colorado at Denver. "Those who start with small changes often end up able to make more and bigger changes and lose more weight."

'Top Model' contestant Jaclyn Poole stepping up her game
Category: Life & Style Written by Jordan Overturf - TDTNews.com
Jaclyn Poole rose to the top three in last week's episode of "America's Next Top Model." Tonight, she may have to fend off a few claws to keep her position near the top.
Tonight the girls have another group photo shoot, only this time they're pairing up with a jaguar cub at the old L.A. Zoo to model a faux fur fashion line by stylist Rachel Zoe. Talk about a catwalk. The pool of competitors prepares to sink to eight and some of these models are starting to show their teeth.
Not the contestant from Belton, though. Poole said with so many girls living in the house, sometimes things get said and someone else takes it the wrong way.
